The dome of the Frauenkirche is special in several ways. Made entirely of sandstone, it weighs over 12,000 tons. With a height of 24 meters and a diameter of 26 meters, it is considered the largest stone dome north of the Alps. The shape is also unique: the convexly curved dome start and the concave further course give the impression of a bell. This appearance earned the Frauenkirche its nickname “stone bell”.
The climb itself is an experience. In stair tower G, 174 steps initially lead to a height of 29 meters. Thanks to large glass windows, guests can look down into the church interior and up to the paintings on the inner dome. The path continues over narrow stairs to the so-called spiral ramp, a continuously ascending spiral corridor. The guests circle the outer dome two and a half times. This section is strenuous: after all, the path, which was previously used as a “donkey walk” and was named accordingly, has a gradient of 14 percent. Two further flights of stairs - one of which is in the form of a steep ladder - take visitors to the 67 m high viewing platform. There you have a unique view of Dresden and the surrounding area.
